Prostate cancer screening attempts to find prostate cancer in individuals at an early and potentially curable stage before symptoms have developed with the aim to treat the disease and decrease the death rate from prostate cancer. Screening for prostate cancer is performed by a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) blood test and a DRE (Digital Rectal Examination).
The terms prostate cancer screening and prostate cancer testing are often interchanged. Although in their purest definition they are slightly different they refer to the same process, diagnosing prostate cancer, and for the purpose of this document will be interchanged.
